What it is and where it comes from

Chlordane is a broad-spectrum organochlorine insecticide used extensively for termite control and on crops including corn and citrus. All uses were banned in the United States in 1988. Chlordane is extremely persistent in soil and can leach slowly into groundwater over decades. Legacy contamination is most prevalent in areas with intensive historical use.

Health effects

Chronic chlordane exposure is associated with liver damage and increased cancer risk. EPA classifies it as a probable human carcinogen (Group B2). Animal studies show liver tumors at elevated doses. It bioaccumulates in fatty tissue and can be passed to infants through breast milk. Children and immunocompromised individuals are most vulnerable.

About this data

A system is counted once if any of its violations in the past three years involved Chlordane, including monitoring and reporting lapses. Rules violated and status in the systems table are for the whole system, not Chlordane alone. Counts cover active systems in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The records are from EPA's data refresh of Oct 7, 2026; EPA refreshes this data quarterly, and states report to EPA with a lag of three to six months, so the newest violations may not appear yet.
