What it is and where it comes from

Endothall is an aquatic and terrestrial herbicide used to control algae, weeds, and grass in irrigation canals, ponds, and lakes. It is still in use in the United States and is applied directly to water bodies for aquatic vegetation management. It degrades relatively quickly in aquatic environments but can appear in source water shortly after application.

Health effects

Short-term exposure above the MCL can cause gastrointestinal irritation and stomach cramps. Chronic exposure is associated with liver, kidney, and gastrointestinal damage in animal studies. EPA has not classified endothall as a human carcinogen. The general population is at risk from water system violations.

About this data

A system is counted once if any of its violations in the past three years involved Endothall, including monitoring and reporting lapses. Rules violated and status in the systems table are for the whole system, not Endothall alone. Counts cover active systems in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The records are from EPA's data refresh of Oct 7, 2026; EPA refreshes this data quarterly, and states report to EPA with a lag of three to six months, so the newest violations may not appear yet.
