Benzo(a)pyrene
Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formed during incomplete combustion of organic material.
What it means: Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formed during incomplete combustion of organic material. It enters drinking water primarily through leaching from coal tar linings in older water storage tanks and distribution pipes, as well as from contaminated soil and industrial runoff. It is one of the most studied PAHs due to its potent carcinogenicity.
Health effects: Benzo(a)pyrene is classified by EPA as a probable human carcinogen (Group B2) and is a well-established animal carcinogen. Long-term exposure is associated with increased cancer risk, particularly for reproductive organ cancers. It is also linked to immune system effects and developmental toxicity in animal studies.
Limit: 0.0002 mg/L (0.2 ppb)
About this contaminantAbout this data
EPA counts the rules a system was in violation of, not the individual violations; one rule can carry several in the same period. Unresolved means still in violation at EPA's latest data refresh. Measured contaminant levels are not part of this record; each system publishes them in its annual Consumer Confidence Report.
Service area from EPA's Public Water System Service Area Boundaries dataset: State Agency. The system's location is the centre of the service area EPA publishes for the system.
Source: the U.S. EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online system (ECHO), which publishes the federal Safe Drinking Water Information System. EPA's terms and values are shown as published. The West Virginia records are from EPA's data refresh of Oct 7, 2026; EPA refreshes this data quarterly, and states report to EPA with a lag of three to six months, so the newest violations may not appear yet.
